Advocating for independent voices, creative communities, and audio businesses since 2009

Hi. I’ve closed deals, dispensed advice, negotiated contracts, drafted paperwork, and held pre-litigation fire drills for all types of people and companies in the thrilling, maddening world of podcasting and audio for a little while now. My client list is private but currently includes podcast sales and content networks, production studios, ad tech companies, journalists, and award-winning independent creators and producers.

I’m not taking on new clients at the moment, but I’m not not taking on new clients. To put it another way, I’m keeping a small client list to ensure that everyone gets the care and responsiveness they need, and being very selective about new engagements. If your project is cool and our values align, we might be a good match. Moreover, I really enjoy hearing what people in the industry are up to. Even if I can’t take on new legal work, I’m happy to find someone for you who can.

Reasonable rates, including refundable retainers and flat fees. And sometimes free.

Areas of Practice

Podcasting

That’s pretty much it for me right now, by design. I do have experience in virtually every other area of entertainment and media law (including heavy litigation dockets), so if you are in the podcast world and have other needs, I can likely help with those, too.

Distribution Deals

My favorite. I’m happy to negotiate deals directly, negotiate in the background, draft contracts, or mark up a counterparty’s suggested language. I would also be pleased to work with, or coach, other lawyers who may be new to podcasting.

Production Legal

This could not be more important, and I’ve been practicing in this area since 2010. I have been thinking a lot about privacy policies and data processing agreements lately, but I can also look at a company’s broader practices in this area (or lack thereof) for a more comprehensive review.

Privacy

I love audio drama, and audio drama needs production legal. So do documentaries. This is “commodity work” to some practitioners, but I am not too proud to churn out certificates and paperwork for you.

Intellectual Property

So copyright law. Very trademark.

Get in Touch

I’d rather take on new engagements through referrals, but I also realize that can filter out some voices, especially those of people of color, queer folx, and women. So if that’s you — or you are really in a bind, with an impending deal and no lawyer who is experienced in this area to help you — I’ve got a link to my LinkedIn on the top right of this site, and a contact form linked above and below.
